Re: How much wheat fits in 5 gallon bucket?
I ordered some 50lbs bags from honeyville and the website says 50lbs will fit into 1 bucket. I will find out here shortly.
rice - I got about 40-50lbs into one bucket if my memory serves me correct. Oats - I put two of the BIG BOXES of quaker oats from costco into 5gal buckets. Powdered milk - 25lbs per bucket Sugar - 25lbs per bucket. |
Re: How much wheat fits in 5 gallon bucket?
Seems like the general consensus for most grains is like 25-33 pounds in 5 gallon bucket.

Re: How much wheat fits in 5 gallon bucket?
It will depend. Are you just putting the stuff straight into the bucket, or are you lining the bucket with mylar bags?
I line my buckets with 6 gal mylar bags, so I lose some capacity. Still, I can get 40 lbs of rice in a 5 gal bucket. I also bought a 50 lb bag of wheat, and in addition the 5 gallong bucket, I also filled two 1 gal mylar bags, one quart Mason jar, and half of a pint jar. FWIW, these places that sell the 6 gallon superpails (6 gal buckets lined with mylar bags) advertise 45 lbs of wheat per pail. |
Re: How much wheat fits in 5 gallon bucket?
I was going to buy some 50 lb bags of grain and just wanted to be sure I had enough to fill the bucket. We have a Fleet Farm store that has 50 lb bags of whole oats for horses (I think) for $10.50. The feed mill has 50lbs of wheat (hard winter) for $13.50, he said he gets it from a local farmer and is nothing but wheat as far as he knows but will not guarantee it for human consumsion. I am going to grind some up to flour in a vita-mix and see how it works before I seal it in the bucket.I am planning on using the mylar bags.
I have a bunch of 4 gallon buckets that had sour cream in them, I know they are food grade and I can get plenty more for free so I might try them instead of the 5 gallon for $4 (with lid) from Home Depot. Do you fore see any problems with using 4 gallon buckets instead? So do you think I can plan on 40 lbs of Pinto bean to a 5 gallon bucket? I also heard something about mylar bags not being the best to seal rice because they might puncture. Anybody do rice and not have problems? At the most I was thinking of putting a plastic bag inside the mylar bag to line it so the rice wouldn't poke through. We had our first 2 snowfalls of the year in one week and they were already talking on the news at noon about a shortage of salt this year. It is only the first week!! Last year you could not even get water softener salt towards the end of the winter. You could see how something could easily happen to our food supply if we had some sort of "EVENT"! |

It has to be less than 41.5 pounds because that's what 5 gal of water weighs and grain is lighter than water.

You could put 2 of them against a wall 8 feet apart or so and put 2x boards across them for tha base for a shelf system and store your other things that you need access to on the shelves. Or a big ol barrel you could just stick it in the corner of garage or basement and pile junk all around it.....stealth. |
Re: How much wheat fits in 5 gallon bucket?
Thanks for all the ifo. I guess I am ready to get going on this project.I have most of the food/grain in hand will have to wait till I have more time to seal them up. I am thinking of going the fiber barrel route. that way I could pack smaller bags and take out only what I need. Still not sure though, it seems like everyday you learn something new here! Thanks again .
